May, 2003

Hello Everyone,

We are going to dedicate this months news to the 2 main events for the month of May: Our Black Belt / Black Sash Summit Camp and our 4th Annual Warrior Quest Championships.

And what an AWESOME pair of events. We had Modern Farang Mu Sul® Masters, Instructors, Students and family members coming in to San Francisco from all corners of the U.S. It was truly a historical week end, filled with fun, training and "magic". Their support really made this whole affair worth while. Thank you all very much.

The day started with a quick breakfast (not too much, because we are about to get into some serious training!), then we're off to the Headlands of the Golden Gate for a brisk morning run in and out of a beautiful forest trail mixed with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and The Golden Gate Bridge. That's what I call a great run! We stopped for an hour of meditation on one of the cliffs. Then we made our way to Ft. Miley, for training in and around the old cannon emplacements. We reviewed tons of Forms, as well as their applications. Then we switched our focus to weapons. Inst. Schleeter took over Sword, Inst. King was in charge of Jung Bong, Inst. Stenson did a great job teaching Knife, Inst. Dehnert taught Staff, and Inst. Spataro graced us with Sang Jyel Bong. I filled in the rest with Dan Bong, Rope, Tiger Claw Knife, Fan and more. What a full day of weapons forms and self defense sets. Too much fun!

We had a very pleasant picnic lunch. Took advantage and had a Modern Farang Mu Sul® meeting, then wrapped up the morning session, because we retired to "Casa De Alba" for Firearms training. Inst. King and myself took care of hand gun training, followed by a very interesting and thorough session on the M-16 / AR-15 rifle, conducted by Master James De Alba. We then went to the range for live fire training. Believe it or not, we then went to our tournament site to do the last minute set up for the next days event, then went to dinner, and then to Inst. Stenson's house for an impromptu party. Whew....what a full day (trust me we were not complaining).

The next day was our 4th Annual Warrior Quest Championship. This years' event proved to be much bigger and better than ever before. Once again, we had the support of our many martial arts brothers and it was soo nice to see all of the Modern Farang Mu Sul® people who came in from all over to attend.

So, once again, after brief introductions and speeches, the events got under way (Kim, Justine and Stuart handled business at the registration desk!). The kids and juniors forms and sparring divisions were first and went very smooth and quickly. It is soo fun to watch the little guys do their thing. Too cute!

Black Belt Forms was filled with great competition, followed by Weapons Forms. Congrats go to Inst. Gumina, Inst. Earl Boyd, Inst. Carlos Sanchez, and Inst. Chris Knight for such awesome performances (and "represent'n").

In the Self Defense division, Inst. Schleeter did an awesome job, but was upstaged one more time by Sensei Reed who took first place (FOR THE 4th YEAR in a row!!). Congratulations Sir! Well done.

We broke for lunch and had great demonstrations. We were honored by Mestranda "Cigarra" Márcia Treidler's ABADÁ-Capoeira group. They dazzled the crowd with amazing kicks, flips, and infectious music. IDSC presented her with a special award. Next, Inst. Schleeter did an incredible demo with his version of "The Dance Of Pain". He did an impressive series of joint locks that lead to continuous locks in grappling positions (leg locks and all). Inst. Joseph Gumina did a beautiful Boo Che Hyung (Fan Form), followed by myself, where I did empty hand self defense, and knife fighting and empty hand knife defense. (The crowd went wild!!)

Then day winded down with Black Belt sparring and of course, we had another great show in the grappling divisions, Middle Stick Sparring, and Knife Sparring......Whew!....What an awesome time. I can't wait for next year.

OK, that's all for now. With brotherhood,

Kuk Sa – De Alba
