May, 2008
Welcome to our May Modern
Farang Mu Sul® newspage. Normally, May is the month we have
our annual FMS Tournament: Warrior Quest. Due to so many conflicts
in May, we have decided to move the event to June. Hopefully, this
will allow all who want to attend the opportunity to make it. We're
ready for you. OK, we have lots of Modern Farang Mu Sul® news
from all around the world, so let's get to it. Here are some updates:
FMS
- WHQ: This month we start off with another awesome Special
FMS Black Belt / Black Sash workshop. We have been doing many of
these training camps in the last few years. Hey, we need to, because
FMS has so many black belts now. Well, that is music to Kuk Sa Nim's
ears, and he is only too happy to teach and share his insights into
these advanced areas of training. For this particular workshop,
we focused solely on 2nd Dan material. We worked on entire self
defense sets such as: - TUK SOO E DAN GOL JYEL GI SUL - Special
2 joint breaking techniques, - PAL GAE HWAE JUN SUL - 8 point spinning
techniques, and - KI YUK YONG SUL - Techniques using opponents power.
Once again, Inst. Joseph
Gumina coordinated all the gang at his dojang at the Salesian Boys
and Girls Club in the North Beach district of San Francisco. Thank
you and good job Sir.
It
is easy to see how the previous knowledge comes into play as it
is a foundation for these next level sets. Everything from the color
belt levels and the subsequent black belt levels, all work together
in a seamless flow. It is wonderful to see how everything connects
and what comes out is some of the most impressive (and painful)
self defense techniques.
Training this way, coupled
with Kuk Sa Nim's fantastic explanations and insights, makes these
advanced joint locks and techniques seem simple and flow so easily.
Modern Farang Mu Sul® has so much integrated knowledge, and
it is so awesome to be able to actually learn it all. Kuk Sa Nim,
you're the best. Thank you so much Sir. FARANG!

After
a full morning of training, it was time to quell our hunger. We
all had developed quite an appetite. Since San Francisco is known
as the city of restaurants, well we needed to take advantage. You
can literally find food from all over the world in San Francisco.
Well, since
we were in the North Beach district of San Francisco, we figured
why not find a nice Italian restaurant. Well, that wasn't hard.
We decided on an ol' standby, North Beach Pizza. They not only serve
some of the best pizza in town, but also many other tasty Italian
dishes. We were not disappointed. What a great end to a great day.
We look forward to the next Special FMS Black Belt Workshop.

As most
of you know by now, Kuk Sa Nim recently moved to Santa Rosa, Ca.
which is an hour North of San Francisco, smack in the middle of
the Wine Country. Well, if you start feeling nostalgic from when
you could just pop over his house for some training, well you still
can. You just need to call him and set up a weekend. He has even
made his own new private gym, complete with all the things we need
for some good training. That is so awesome. Sign us up!
And speaking
of Santa Rosa, we have been craving some good live MMA action, and
to our pleasant surprise, there were some shows being held right
there in town. Kuk Sa Nim has made a good connection with the Nor-Cal
Fighting Alliance, which is run by none other than UFC veteran Dave
Terrell. They have become fast friends, and when they found out
that they had some fighters in this upcoming show, well, we couldn't
miss it.
So, Master
Schleeter, Inst. Boyd, Clarence Jones and Michael Jr. joined Kuk
Sa Nim for some fun and action. We not only saw some great fights,
but we also had a chance to see some of our other friends from the
MMA world such as Frank Shamroock, Urijah Faber (from the WEC),
Danny "Bam" Sell, and several others. What a blast.
And
as a reminder, Kuk Sa Nim is scheduled to travel up to the great
Northwest, to do a special joint seminar with his good friend, Grand
Master Rudy Timmerman. The special seminars are sponsored by Ki
Do Kwan founder Chief Master Robert Ott. Kuk Sa Nim has developed
a very special and warn relationship with Mast Ott in the last year.
Joining in the activities is Sa Ja Nim Timmerman's right hand man,
Master Kevin Janessie from Portland, Oregon. This one has all the
marking of one historical event, so if you can, please try to make
it to the Temple of Certain Victory in Olympia, Wa. For more info

And last
but not least, don't forget that we moved the 9th Annual Warrior
Quest Championships to Saturday, June 14th. It will be held
at the same location as last year which is John O'Connell High School
Gymnasium, in San Francisco. For more info click: HERE
FMS
Germany : We got word that Inst. Michael
Klockner and the Köln
- Farang Mu Sul®
Team were guests on the TV show: Rheinsport
auf Center TV. Inst. Klockner gave and interview while the Köln
- Farang Mu Sul®
Demo Team put on a fantastic exhibition for
the locals watching as well as all the viewers at home.
They
demonstrated stand up empty hand self defense, combative grappling,
forms, weapons and more. The crowd loved the high kicks, the hardcore
kick boxing into (painful) joint locks, and were amazed at the spectacular
falling techniques. Mind you this was all done outside in public
with the only "mats" being the bricked sidewalks. Good
job everyone. Way to represent. Farang!!!

FMS
Puerto Rico : We just got our hands on the latest copy of
Tae Kwon Do Times. This is actually the May 2008 issue. This magazine
is distributed internationally to dozens of countries.
Well, this issue had
a special write up on Kuk Sa Nim's last trip to the lovely and enchanting
island paradise that is Puerto Rico.
It not only covered all
the fantastic training, demos and seminars, but it also outlined
the momentous occasion of the last FMS black belt test. It was fantastic,
as we had no less than six juniors testing, as well as six adults
testing. This is by far the most combined groups that have tested
in one year.
Two things also made
these test extra special. Inst. Beth Matulich from Hollister, Ca.
was on hand to sit in on the judges panel with Master Dennis Vega
and the rest of the FMS Puerto Rico black belts. Also, this test
marked the first ever FMS junior black belt test for Puerto Rico.
Very cool indeed. There is s very nice photo too. Congratulations
Master Vega and all the FMS Puerto Rico family. You guys are awesome.

FMS
Portugal: Once again, we received lots of exciting news
from the industrious FMS Portugal group. Inst. Nelson Pinto and
crew have been very busy with several seminars.
Inst. Pinto's
teaching are starting to become quite in demand as his versatility
is becoming more and more known. Modern Farang Mu Sul® is providing
all the tools and Inst. Pintos' got them!
He has done
seminars on Women's Self Defense, a variety of Special Weapons Seminars
such as FMS Combat Knife and Middle Stick (Dan Gum Sul and Jung
Bong Sul), as well as several others.
One in particular
was on FMS-CQC which was geared specifically for law enforcement
and military personnel. In this workshop, Inst. Pinto covers all
areas of hand to hand combat and applications of special weapons
and special tactics. Opponent restraint and control, arresting,
hand gun retention, fire arms tactics, combat knife fighting, empty
hand vs knife and gun, are among the main topics covered. What a
great opportunity for all involved. This knowledge is very unique
and unfortunately, due to the needs of these modern times, it is
also in much demand. Good work Sir.
Inst. Pinto also made
an appearance in the international magazine: Armas e Municoes (Weapons
and Ammunitions). In this issue he discussed the FMS-CQC system
of self defense. It was a very thorough, timely and well written
piece. The pictures and technique examples are also top notch. Inst.
Pinto is working very hard teaching and spreading FMS through all
avenues. His hard work is really paying off. Next he has his sights
on the top martial arts magazine in Europe: Cinturon Negro (aka:
Budo International, Black Belt, Kampkunst, and other names as it
is internationally distributed) Congratulations Sir. Job well done.
And speaking
of news, the local news media is taking notice, and have run several
pieces on the various seminars and workshops that Inst. Pinto and
the FMS Portugal family are doing. Good work everyone. You guys
rock!
Farang!!!
Other
News : As we mentioned before, Kuk Sa Nim's sister and FMS
student Norma De Alba recently returned to Melbourne, Australia.
Some may remember that she lived there off and on last year.
Her husband
Tenis is a businessman who travels all over the world, and as such,
Norma had her main home base still in San Francisco (her hometown).
Well, she decided to stop all of the jumping around, and move completely
to Australia. She says she will continue to return to San Francisco
for visits, but she plans on staying fulltime in Melbourne. We will
miss her, and wish her well.
Also,
our good friend Guru Bram Frank has forwarded us his schedule for
the rest of the year. For those not in the know, Bram is one of
the closest and highest ranked students of Modern Arnis founder,
the late great Remy Presas.
Guru Bram
is the founder of CSSD / SC - Common Sense Self Defense Street Combat.
He is also
world renown for his knife training programs, and is the creator
of the Gunting and Crimpit knives made by Spyderco.
He trains
civilians, law enforcement and military personnel from all over
the globe. He also does a world renown knife program annually in
Israel called "The Commandments of Steele". Kuk Sa Nim
and Guru Bram Frank are very close friends, and share many of the
same philosophies in terms of real world self defense and especially
knife defense and knife fighting. If you can, check out one of his
seminars. For more info, Click: HERE
And last
but not least, many of you know Master Jino Kang from his close
relationship with Kuk Sa Nim. We have conducted our annual FMS black
belt camp at his dojang in San Francisco several times. Well, for
those that did not know, he is also a film producer and an actor
of TV and the big Screen. He starred in "Blade Warrior",
and has recently completed the new action film "Hand 2 Hand".
There are a bevy of co-stars including Bill Duff of the TV show,
Human Weapon, "Judo" Gene LaBell, Eddie "Twister"
Bravo, and the legend Charles Gracie. It looks like a winner. Congratulations
Sir. Check is out: HERE
