June, 2006
Welcome everyone, to
a very special month of activity for Modern Farang Mu Sul®.
We have a new theme developing, and that is FMS weddings. We have
seen more weddings in the last few weeks, and upcoming weeks than
ever in FMS history. Incredibly beautiful and wonderful is how I
describe it. OK, here are some updates:
FMS
- WHQ: Modern Farang Mu Sul® is experiencing somewhat
of a boom in weddings recently. Several FMS black belts have either
already gotten married or are about to get married. A few months
ago Inst. Stuart McCalla and Aya tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony
over in Tilden Park, in the East bay. Inst. King and Heather are
next on the list followed by Inst. Joseph Gumina and Joy who are
getting married in July, and if that was not enough, in Portugal,
Inst. Nelson Pinto and Vera are set for nuptials in July as well.
Wow, like I said, LOTS
of weddings. Well before we get to the wedding action, the big question
is: What comes before the wedding ceremony?
The bachelor party
of course. As best man in Inst. King's wedding it was my duty to
make sure he never forgets the days of singlehood. So, we decided
to return to the spot of the "original sin" for Terry:
Northbeach. The world famous Saloon and the Grant and Green to be
more specific. Those of you who have visited San Francisco, know
these spots. They are Blues Clubs with live music in Northbeach,
and boy do we have a storied past there with Inst. King. And talk
about great timing, we just so happened to pick a weekend that was
also "The Northbeach Festival". I'm talking EVERYONE was
out having a good time. Needless to say we started the evening with
some Cubanskis and salsa music at the Cigar Bar in the financial
district, and moved on later and "did Northbeach". All
I can say is that I'm sure glad I had Inst. Earl Boyd to help me
later with Inst. King. That's all I can say on that matter. The
end result: Mission Accomplished. Etch one heck of a bachelor party
for Inst. King and his boys into the history books.
(Pitures: 1- Inst. King getting some love from his
guys in from of the Grant and Green, 2- Having a great time at the
Cigar bar)
And as if
that were not enough, Inst. Joseph Gumina's brother and best man,
big "Brother John", wanted to give Joey a good send off
too. This one of course was with a little less "silly guy stuff",
well sort of. I guess we did some of that too. Well anyway. We sure
enjoyed ourselves and celebrated with Joey.
With Joey's dad (Mr. Russ Gumina), brother, several uncles, old
friends and martial arts brothers, we all assembled at Fisherman's
Wharf for a fantastic dinner at Cappuro's. Boy were we hooked up.
It just so happens that the restaurant is owned by one of his uncle's.
That's always nice.
We then all headed out
to a comedy club and caught Ken Wohl of "HBO's Arliss"
fame, among some other very talented and funny guys. So, that put
us all into a real good mood. Next up, Gino and Carlos club in
Northbeach.
Yup, it just so happens that the Gumina's all grew up in Northbeach,
so we had THE BEST time together. It's funny to be walking around
Northbeach, and it seems like everyone knows Joey, his dad, uncles
or his brother. Very funny to watch. So, tack another fantastic
bachelor party to the books. All that is left now is the crying.

Also in
June, we were very fortunate to help coordinate and take part in
the latest seminar by the Martial Arts Instructors - USA group (MAI-USA).
This organization was formerly known as SF-Chapter of ATAMA. Well,
for this round, we had Professor Bill Dewart conduct a clinic on
Pressure Point fighting for self defense. Also teaching was Sensei
Anthony Corpus. He did a fantastic workshop on CDT self defense,
of which he is certified instructor. What a fantastic time. I look
forward to the next seminar by MAI-USA. They always put together
a quality time with a friendly, sharing and learning oriented environment.
And now
for some wedding news: Huge congratulations to Inst. Terry King
and Heather on their love filled wedding.
They had a beautiful
ceremony right at the Pacific ocean in the quaint city of Pacifica
(just a couple minutes south of San Francisco). With so much family
and friends in attendance, the love and good wishes were just flowing.
It was so awesome to see Terry's mother dancing with her son at
his wedding. Isn't that every parent's dream? Too cool.
I was also kind of surprised
to see so many "old Modern Farang Mu Sul® students"
there. I guess that everyone that Terry touched, he tried to get
them involved into this great endeavor, which is quality martial
arts / self defense training.
Wow, I can't begin to
tell you how touched I am to take part in helping these wonderful
people on their new journeys. I have now been accused of not only
teaching martial arts as a good way to improve your life, but also
how to settle down in life
I guess that's a good thing
ha.ha.
Congratulations to all. It is my honor and pleasure to watch this
FMS family grow and grow.

FMS
Germany: I got word from Asst. Inst. Juergen Leusch that
the German Modern Farang Mu Sul® group were in hardcore training
for a large tournament in Köln, Germany. Asst. Inst. Michael
Klockner and the Köln FMS group were instrumental in organizing
all involved. They competed with great success in the Forms, Weapons,
Self Defense and of course Sparring divisions.
We are so proud to see
our German Modern Farang Mu Sul® family not only getting the
name out there and doing it right, but also to see them work so
hard and coordinate together on projects such as this, which only
helps to bond and leave memories that will last forever. Big props
to Master Wachsmann, Asst. Inst. Michael Klockner from Köln,
Asst. Inst. Juergen Leusch and Asst. Inst. Frank Gerigk from Gelsenkirchen,
Asst. Inst. Markus Höhne and Asst. Inst. Thomas Schneider from
Winterberg. Keep up the good work everyone.

FMS
- Puerto Rico: Master Vega and all of the Puerto Rico FMS
family are busy preparing for several awesome events. First, a historical
FMS visit to Puerto Rico in December. There are supposed to be a
flood of FMS black belts converging on the island for training and
the other special occasion: The 31st FMS black belt test. Scheduled
to test are a host of black belts from all over including several
from Puerto Rico. So, right now they are all deep into serious training
for this test. We'll keep you all posted with details as they develop.
Keep up the good work
and don't let anything get in your way of achieving your goals.
I look forward to seeing you all later this year in December. It's
going to be so awesome, I can barely wait.
FMS
New York : Inst. Joseph Spataro informs me that the East
coast FMS-TVT team has been asked to take part in the next NHB event
in New Jersey called "Combat in the Cage". This looks
promising. I hope they can find opponents that are not only a good
challenge, but someone they can learn and grow from. Master Schleeter
will be handling the matchmaking duties. We'll stay tuned.
FMS
Portugal: Let's just say that Inst. Pinto and the Modern
Farang Mu Sul® Portugal family have a lot on their plate lately.
Between promoting their new movie: Cross Fire, setting up interviews,
special seminars, special training and color belt testing, they
are also preparing for one other little occasion: Inst. Pinto and
Vera's wedding in July. That is more than one could possibly ask
for.
Oh, but no, wait, there
is more. Since Inst. Terry King and myself will be making the trip
to Portugal to attend this blessed event, we decided to take advantage
and do some more special training and an open seminar while we're
there. But wait, there's more. As if that were not enough, Inst.
Pinto is also preparing for his next FMS black belt test. He will
be testing for the very rare 3rd Dan level.
Let's just say that I'm
impressed, awed and super excited. I can hardly wait to see all
the students, new students, training, BLACK BELT TEST, and of course
the real purpose of this trip: Nelson and Vera's wedding. Can't
wait

FMS - Poland :
Inst. Katarznya Klepczyk and Asst. Inst. Andrzej Klepczyk from our
Wroclaw, Poland FMS dojang, recently conducted color belt testing
for their adult students. Inst. Sebastian Dorobek was on hand to
help with the judging. They are proud to announce that they all
passed with flying colors. Great work and congratulations.

students)
The FMS Wroclaw school
also had another milestone: Their children's program has flourished
under the watchful eye and expert guidance of Asst. Inst. Andrzej
Klepczyk. To the point where the little tigers were now ready to
present their very first color belt test. I think Asst. Inst. Andrzej
Klepczyk was probably more nervous that they were.
Inst. Katarznya Klepczyk
and Inst. Mirgus Guszczynsk were there on the judges panel with
Asst. Inst. Andrzej Klepczyk. Not to worry, the kids did a fantastic
job. HUGE congratulations to all on this momentous occasion. We
are sooo happy and proud of you all.

News: Asst. Inst. Jeff Winters notified me that he is hard
at work on the next Mt. Shasta Film festival. It is slated for October,
but there is so much work and screening of films to be done. It
sounds like this will be their biggest and best one yet. I hope
to make the trip up there to join him.
Also, stay
tuned for news from Inst. Joseph Gumina and Joy's upcoming wedding
in a couple weeks! FARANG!!!
