October, 2004
Well as the year begins
to wind down, one would imagine that FMS activities would be slowing
down as well. No such luck! This has been another hectic month in
what is proving to be another banner year for FMS all around the
world. Here are some updates:
FMS - WHQ:
There were several tremendous events that took place at WHQ
this month, and the main one is a sad one. It is with great sadness
and a heavy heart that we all morn the passing of Chief Inst. Terry
King's father: Fenton King. He was a wonderful human being, and
was not only a huge martial arts admirer, but also helped so many
people from all walks of life. He was a truly inspirational human
being that will be sorely missed. Our prayers go out to Inst. King
and his family. God Bless.
On an upbeat note, the
FMS TVT (Team Vale Tudo) group has been in hard training for several
upcoming events. We are coordinating with several promoters and
fighting clubs to be included in upcoming Muay Thai / Kickboxing,
Vale Tudo shows, including one here in San Francisco. We met up
with Grandmaster Ruby Navarro in Sacramento for an event, and made
mutual plans to get some fights set up. TVT team captain Marlon
Sims and company are ready to GO!
Kuk Sa Nim and Grand Master Ruby Navarro strike a pose.
In other news, we were
also recently in Hollister for our first Black Belt only FMS seminar.
This inagural workshop focused on the famous FMS "Bone Breaking"
Short Stick techniques (Dan Bong Sul). Thank you to all the black
belts that were able to attend and made it so much fun. Inst. King
(SF), Inst. Leith (SF), Inst. Stenson (SF), Inst. Gumina (SF), Inst.
Mague (SF), Inst. McCalla (SF), Master Schleeter (Hollister), Inst.
Dudzik (Hollister), Inst. Boyd (Hollister) and Master Dehnert (LA).
Big thank you to Master Schleeter for hosting us, and taking us
to an awesome BBQ dinner afterwards, as well as drinks and Cubanskis
back at his house. We had a blast going through all of the main
basics, applications, short and long forms also with applications,
and the very important realistic self defense scenario applications.
I live for such occasions! We will be doing more of these workshops
so stay tuned.

FMS
Spokane: Inst. Chris Knight and the FMS family at Spirit
Martial Arts in Spokane have kept very busy with so many events,
such as their Annual Photo Session, an OPEN HOUSE, Buddy Days, SMA
Booster meetings, Color Belt Testing, Demo Team practice and even
squeezed in a special seminar with our good friend: Datu Kelly Worden,
from Tacoma, who taught Arnis and Jeet Kune Do. Whew!...I'm drained
just writing all this. Great work you guys. Keep it up.
FMS
Huntington Beach: We recently returned from
yet another amazing weekend with the FMS family in Huntington Beach.
Inst. Larry Saindon together with Inst. Cassie Van Doren, and Inst.
Nicole Miller put it all together again. We had our annual picnic
and black belt work out. Inst. John Merwin joined us, as did Inst.
David Dehnert and Asst. Inst. Alessandro Padovani. That was a great
surprise! We had so much fun working on tons of empty hand skills,
followed by rolling and flips. All the kids got a chance to work
on their head springs, and most got it. Way cool. We broke for a
delicious lunch, and then got back to work with weapons. We had
groups working on Jung Bong Sul (middle sticks), Jang Bong Sul (long
staff) and Jang Gum Sul (sword). Later we went back to Inst. Saindon's
house for a pool party. So much fun! The following day, we had a
black belt work out, but not before surprising Matt Wagner with
a special test for his Dan Bo rank. He rose to the occasion, and
passed with flying colors. Good job Matt, and good job everyone
on making this such a memorable week end. I can't wait for next
year!
FMS
Mt. Shasta: Asst. Inst. Jeff Winter's hard
work on the first Mt. Shasta Film Festival has paid off in spades.
He had an overwhelming amount of film submissions as well as support
and attendance to the screenings themselves of those movies selected.
He is not only doing great work in offering FMS training to the
Mt. Shasta area, but has also done a magnificent job of offering
a diverse slice of worldwide culture via the film media as well.
Great job Jeff, congratulations and keep up the good work.

FMS
Michigan: Head Inst. Robert Hudson has
also been keeping a busy schedule. For starters, they had Michigan's
1st Adult Promotional Color Belt Testing. Congratulations to Gene
Wolf and Joseph Corrion. This is where it all starts. Inst. Hudson
was also selected to be the Self Defense Instructor for the personal
safety portion of the Michigan Safety Conference. It is a huge two
day event in which every aspect of safety (environmental, personal,
health, etc.) are covered. Without skipping a beat, he has also
conducted several Women's Self Defense Seminars which have been
a huge success. And as if that is not enough, he is also working
on a few scripts for some instructional videos. In the works right
now are "Women's Self Defense", "Children's Safety
& Self Defense", a basic "street self defense"
video for men & women, and also a "Junior Dragons"
curriculum video. Good luck and I can't wait to see the final products.
Feel free to ask me questions, as I am somewhat familiar with making
a video (or two).
FMS
Poland: I just received several e-mails and
pictures from Inst. Klepczyk. They are getting back to work with
new FMS classes. They also recently did a great demo in Wroclaw.
Inst. Guzinski, Asst. Inst. Klepczyk and the Wroclaw group put on
an awesome show. Fantastic! Keep up the good work. I look forward
to seeing you all next year.
FMS Hollister:
Is everyone ready? It's almost time for the first ever: Faultline
Warrior Classic martial arts tournament. As previously noted,
it will be held at San Benito High School in Hollister on Saturday,
November 20th, 2004. We are expecting a great turnout from several
of the FMS schools around the US. The divisions for competition
will mirror the ones from Warrior Quest, so that should be lots
of fun. We will be able to compete in Forms, Weapon Forms, Self
Defense, Stand Up Sparring, FMS Grappling, Sport Jujitsu, and of
course Middle Stick and Knife sparring. Wow, I can hardly wait!
So, let's all make plans to be there and support this awesome event.
Be there or be square.

FMS
Portugal: Inst. Pinto and the Portugal FMS family recently
took part in another great open seminar. This one was with our good
friend Prof. James Muro. He is not only an amazingly fluid and talented
martial artist, but is also such a wonderful human being. He is
such a wealth of information and very willing to share it. Thank
you Sir, and good job all FMS family. We are all here to learn.
FMS
- New York: I just got confirmation that the East Coast
Crew are in formal negotiations to compete in several upcoming Vale
Tudo type events. They have been in serious training for exactly
this type of fighting (NHB) so, that is perfect. We have been invited
to work their corner for the first event. We're there! Good job
you guys!
FMS
- Pennsylvania: Finally and Horray are the first words that
come to mind, as I just received great news from Inst. Michael Nickels.
He passed his Internal Medicine Board Examination. (Trust me...NOT
EASY) Several job opportunities appear to be opening up in the Hershey,
PA region which will be great, and allow Inst. Nickels to get his
schedule more set with work and training. CONGRATULATIONS Sir!!!

News: Master James De Alba has finally completed work on
his second business. For those that may not know, he recently relocated
back to the San Francisco area, Sonoma to be exact. He and his lovely
wife Dolores settled in nicely and bought a beauty salon, when he
noticed the space next door was vacant. Well, it wasn't long before
he was tearing down walls and renovating the location for a new
Day Spa. After several months of hard work, "BLUSH - A Day
Spa" is now officially open. He had his grand opening celebration
with plenty of family, friends, food and wine. Congratulations Sir!
